Thank you, but don't forget - making a donation to ourselves or to another group will certainly help, but the cause of animal welfare is best served by understanding animals and their needs and by taking personal responsibility for their welfare.

Taking responsibility for animal welfare means:

  • Looking after your pets properly - it is not enough to love your dog and give him the best of food if you leave him howling all day on his own. Constant stress is just as cruel as starvation.

  • Reporting genuine cases of cruelty to the Cruelty to Animals Inspector or if you can't get him, then you must report them to the gardai.

  • Not being afraid of encouraging your friends and family to think the same way as you do.

  • Thinking before you use your mobile phone - the inspector is called out many times a week to rescue animals that are not in any way suffering, for example horses love to lie out in the sun just like we do. If you are concerned about a horse lying down in a field then stop your car and walk over or call the horse, if you ring the inspector you could be pulling him away from a genuine case of serious cruelty. Similarly if you see a sheep out on the road it is very easy to turn it into a field or to just call in at the next farmhouse. The inspector could be an hour away and if you leave the sheep on the road you are putting it at risk of being killed or causing a grievous accident to another motorist. Please think before you use your mobile phone

  • Ringing for advice - ring us, one of the other animal welfare organisations, specialist groups or vets. We may not be able to do exactly what you want, but we will use our experience to advise you on how to cope with the situation yourself.
