The CSPCA was founded at a special meeting held at the Imperial Hotel on 19th November 1870. The original minute books have been kept and may be seen by request. The original premises was in Lower Oliver Plunkett Street next to the old Rank's Mill. From 1936 to 2007 we were around the corner in Clontarf Street opposite the Bus Station and from September 2007 our new address has been CSPCA Link Road, Mahon, Cork.

Aims of the Society:

  • To promote animal welfare at Marts, Fairs, Sale yards, on the Public Highway and elsewhere throughout the country.
  • To provide shelter for lost, stray and unwanted animals.
  • To advise owners of animals on aspects of Animal Welfare.
  • To advise and assist owners of sick and injured animals and where necessary to procure veterinary advice and treatment.
  • To cooperate with other organisations concerned with animal welfare and particularly with the Garda Siochana.
  • To support the introduction of Humane Legislation.

Operation Of the Society

The main function of the Society is, as the name suggests, to prevent cruelty throughout the County of Cork. An inspector is employed to investigate all complaints of cruelty however small, and we operate an Animal Ambulance, one of our biggest expenses. As our powers are limited we must contact the Gardai whenever we think a case warrants a prosecution. The Gardai can then decide to prosecute and we depend on the Judge to deliver a stiff sentence.

NEW CSPCA ANIMALS' HOME

Visit the new Animals' Home near Mahon Point, on the bend on the city side of B&Q.  If approaching from the Link Road, pass Mahon Point on your right, go straight through the lights, and we are just past the vets office on your left. If coming the opposite direction, we are on the right, just before the lights for Mahon Point.

The old premises was built in 1936 and not capable of holding the numbers of animals we receive. We have finally moved to the outskirts of the city, a move that has been planned for over 25 years. The new state-of-the-art designed Animals' Home with plenty of open space is finally completed.

The new premises includes many innovations, including underground central heating in the kennels which sounds extravagant, but will enable wet dogs to dry off quickly and cut down on disease problems encouraged by cold and damp weather. An increase in the number of yards and exercise areas will greatly improve conditions for the animals. There is also an Education Centre with projection room for school trips and a meeting room we are hoping to make available to other groups. While the basic costs of building the new home have been covered by the sale of the existing Clontarf Street site, the running costs of the bigger premises will need to be financed and if you can help with ideas for fundraising please contact us on 1550 200789.
