Fundraising events

Thanks to all who ran the Cork mini-marathon and organised their sponships for us.

Thanks to the “The Hobies” an Innishannon based band who donated €1 for each CD they sold over a 3 month period in the summer playing traditional music in a Santa Ponsa bar.

The latest group to offer to help us is the CTRL ALT DELETE showcase in Fred Zepplins, featuring live electronic music from local producers in Cork, Ireland. Profits from their well supported events are being donated to the CSPCA. The next event is 12th November and is well worth supporting for its own sake.

Kittens

Cruelty or not?

We are often asked if we prosecute all cases of cruelty. Sometimes it not as black-and-white as you might think. Here are some "before" and "after" pictures of a dog collected in the city:

At first sight he looked terribly neglected, but underneath the neglected grooming he is a happy, well-fed dog. The owner was not well and was barely able to look after himself. He readily gave up the dog to the CSPCA for adoption and we found him a new home within two days.

Cork Summer Show

CSPCA is delighted to have renewed its relationship with the Cork Summer Show (formerly held on the Marina, now moved to Ballincollig). Members and staff spent a very pleasant two days at the show.

Thefts - ferret

The Independent newspaper:

"ANIMAL welfare staff were astounded when a man coolly walked into their care shelter and attempted to steal a ferret. Cork District Court heard that P****** O'R***** (40) was spotted by a CSPCA inspector as he reached into a cage, grabbed a ferret and prepared to leave the shelter with it. Gardai caught O'R***** before he was able to leave."

Regular visitors to the Animals' Home know our resident ferret "Ted". Many of the school tours that visit us want to play with the animals, but sometimes we have no puppies or kittens and do not know enough about the adult dogs and cats to trust them with a crowd of young people. Ted the ferret is very tame due to being handled every day and he provides great photo opportunities for the students and their teachers. He would have been a great loss to us and we are grateful to Blackrock gardaí and to Anglesea Street for their prompt and efficient action. Ted is now back in full-time employment.

Thefts - rabbits

Besides the dogs and cats the Animals' Home occasionally receives rabbits (during the year 10-15, mostly in the autumn). Adult rabbits are quite hard to find homes for, everyone wants young fluffy ones, but when the get bigger no-one seems to want them so we are always happy when someone wants to give a rabbit a home.

Last week we had two rabbits for homes and four rabbits we are looking after for a lady who is in hospital. Some youths got into the yard over the weekend and stole one from each group. On the Monday a man brought them back in to us saying his son had been offered them for sale. This theft was so mean, if someone wanted a rabbit we would have given it to them and imagine how the lady in hospital would have felt?
